IFS (Internal Family Systems)

Do you ever feel like you have different parts or aspects of yourself that act, think, or feel differently than other parts of you or that feel polarized?

Do you ever wonder why a part of you reacts intensely and defensively or why you shut down and hold your emotions in, feeling like you have a wall built around you that won’t let others in?

Do you ever feel an inner peace or inner wisdom that you feel connected to, compassionate towards, and calm, or curious about?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you will want to read more about IFS.

IFS was created by Dick Schwartz PhD in the 1990s after he noticed many of his clients referring to internal and disparate parts of themselves that felt out of harmony with one another.  He describes IFS as “a transformative, evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people heal by accessing and loving their protective and wounded inner parts.”  IFS centers around the premise that our minds contain multiplicity and that every single part of our psyche is valuable, even the parts of us that present us with pain and challenges.

In IFS, Schwartz states, “We believe the mind is naturally multiple and that is a good thing.  Just like members of a family, inner parts are forced from their valuable states into extreme roles within us.”  Using IFS I will help you to connect with your inner leader, called Self in IFS, as well as the various aspects or "parts" of yourself that may be protecting, managing, distracting, or soothing you or reacting in extreme to your inner and outer world.
